The American Black Bear is the most common bear species native to North America.Though they generally have shaggy black hair, the coat can vary in color depending on the subspecies, from  chocolate-brown, to cinnamon-brown and blonde. There are 16 recognized species of American Black Bear.

1 in 10 black bears born on the remote island of Princess Royal in British Columbia, Canada are white. These "Spirit Bears" are found no where else on earth!  Fewer than 400 of these unique and elusive bears are left and their future is threatened by habitat loss.
