African wild dogs are classified in the true dog family, along with jackals, foxes, coyotes, wolves, dingoes, and domestic dogs. Once found in most parts of Africa south of the Sahara Desert,  these African predators are considered the second most endangered carnivore (after the Ethiopian wolf) in Africa.
